Grade 5/6 News - Term 3

 

Welcome back to everyone, we trust that you had a relaxing and enjoyable break.  We begin what will be another exciting, yet busy term.  During the term all students will participate in a public speaking program, school concert and science expo.  In addition to this Grade 6 students will be participating in the Go Girls and Being Boys programs aimed at building self esteem and social skills.  The school has received some funding towards these programs and these programs will begin at the start of the term.

 

This term at Tecoma the entire school will be investigating the concept of creativity and the Grade 5/6s will be undertaking studies on Inventions. Students will be looking into the history of inventions and how inventions have developed over time.  A project aimed at developing the children’s different learning styles is planned and they will be working on this project throughout the term.

 

In Mathematics this term, students will be continuing to develop their skills in fractions, and percentages, data collection and graphing skills, averages, tessellations and angles.  In addition to these topics we will continue to develop skills in the four processes and problem solving skills.  Students are expected to keep practising their knowledge of times tables and basic number facts.

 

To tie in with the topic of Inventions, in English we will closely look at procedural texts and the processes required to write them.   Students will continue to develop strategies in planning, editing and publishing their writing correctly using punctuation, capital letters, full stops, question, exclamation and quotation marks. They will be encouraged to make informed attempts at spelling using an awareness of sound and visual patterns.

 

The term promises to fly by quickly and we will be busy throughout.  If at any stage you have any concerns please feel free to contact your child’s class teacher.  We look forward to seeing you throughout the term.
